Brumat Winery: certified organic white wines from Friuli Isonzo, Italy
Rooted in one place. Since 1952.
We are an artisanal, family-run estate in Medea, a village not far from the Slovenian border, where the Isonzo River flows cold toward the Adriatic.
This is the edge of Italy. This is not a poetic choice. It is a terroir choice.
The alluvial soils of gravel and clay that the Isonzo has built over millennia give our white wines a precise, vertical minerality that is rare to find elsewhere in Italy. Two contrasting winds, the cold Bora from the east and the warm Scirocco from the Mediterranean, alternate throughout the growing season, creating strong temperature swings that preserve natural acidity and build aromatic complexity. A specific microclimate. A narrow window of territory. Wines that cannot be replicated.
The Brumat family has farmed this land since 1952. Three generations. The same vineyard. The same approach. No shortcuts.
Four hectares. A deliberate scale.
Azienda Agricola Brumat produces certified organic wine across four hectares of vineyard in Medea, Friuli Isonzo. We will not grow beyond this. This is not a constraint — it is a decision that allows us to maintain full control over every stage of production: soil management, hand harvesting, cellar work, bottling.
Four hectares means Gabriele knows every row. He knows how each vine behaves across different vintages. He knows when to wait and when to act.
Annual production ranges between 7,000 and 10,000 bottles, depending on the season. A limited quantity that reflects the honesty of a vineyard producing what nature allows, nothing more, nothing less. Not a marketing strategy. A reality.
Certified organic farming: a method, not a trend
We are certified EU Organic (IT-BIO-005 – Agricoltura Italia), members of I Vignaioli Indipendenti (Independent Winemakers), and proud members of The Old Vine Conference.
Organic farming is not a commercial positioning for us. It is the method we have always used, now formalised in a certification that gives our buyers (importers, wine bars, independent retailers) the traceability and consistency that the certified organic market demands.
In the vineyard: no herbicides, no synthetic pesticides, active soil management to support biodiversity and microbial life. Our vines are 50 to 70 years old — deep roots, naturally low yields, concentrated terroir expression from the Friuli Isonzo DOC.
In the cellar: minimal intervention. Respect for the product. No technological shortcuts.
Our main sustainable actions:
- The sowing of herbaceous crops from green manure so as to bring organic plant substance to the soil;
- The controlled management of grassing between the rows;
- The decisive reduction of the use of copper and non-use of insecticides, beyond the mandatory treatments for the containment of some physiopathies (flavescence);
- The insertion of apiaries near the vineyard. As is known, much literature speaks of the role of bees as a fundamental indicator of the health of a place. In fact, bees are considered “environmental sentinels”;
- Still implementation of preventive measures with the aim of protecting the plant, followed by strict controls;
- Pruning and management of the leaf cover to achieve the right balance between the development of the plant and for better penetration of light and treatments, as well as for effective ventilation of the grapes;
- Maintenance of ditches and dirt roads for water regulation;
- Energy saving thanks to the presence of a photovoltaic system that generates the electricity used for the Company and the Osteria. Still an electric bike charging point is an additional plus;
- Our bottles are sustainable with a weight of about 450 gr. to minimise CO2 emissions even during transport. The caps are also natural and the cartons in our packaging are made of recycled paper.
